A treatment used presently by different medical facilities due to its healing and anti-inflammatory properties. The use of PRP treatment has gained popularity in the field of cosmetology and dermatology for the past decade due to its tissue regeneration, wound healing, scar revision, skin rejuvenating effects.
Evolution of platelet-rich plasma
The concept of Platelet-rich plasma came up in the year 1970 in the field of haematology, ten years later PRP was used for maxillofacial surgeries and subsequently it was used in orthopaedic procedures for sports injuries. In recent times the use of PRP treatment is trending and gained popularity and being used for hair restoration and other nonsurgical cosmetic procedures.
What is PRP?
The whole blood has two components PLASMA and PLATELETS
Plasma - The liquid part of whole blood containing water and proteins
Platelets, also known as thrombocytes, blood cells that are responsible for blood clotting and other necessary growth healing processes
PRP is a biological product defined as a portion of the plasma fraction of autologous blood with a platelet concentration above the baseline.
The key role of activated platelets is to initiate or stimulate the body’s natural healing process.
Procedure The Whole blood from the patient is drawn at the time of treatment and collected in a tube containing an anticoagulant, such as citrate dextrose to prevent platelet activation prior to its use. A 30 cc venous blood drawn will yield 3-5 cc of PRP depending on the baseline platelet count of the patient and the technique PRP is prepared by a process known as differential centrifugation. In the PRP preparation, initial centrifugation to separate red blood cells from the whole blood is followed by second centrifugation to concentrate platelets, which are suspended in the smallest final plasma volume. These activated platelets are then ready to be injected directly into affected area. These releases growth factors that stimulate and increase the number of reparative cells produced in the body.
PRP Treatment - A Newer Revolution in Hair restoration / Trichology The first question which comes to mind is why another hair loss treatment amongst the myriads of other available treatments Though there are a lot of available options for hair loss the search for newer more effective treatment options is never-ending The PRP, when injected in the scalp, induces the proliferation of hair follicles (dermal papilla) and the growth factor in the platelets attach the bulge area of the hair follicle stimulating hair growth through angiogenesis and the promotion of vascularisation. The treatment not only promotes hair growth but also is effective in increasing density, thickness and volume of hair.
Pretreatment The patient should be explained about the procedure Certain investigations like Haemoglobin and platelet count should be performed before the procedure The patient should not be on any blood thinners at the time of the procedure The patient should not be empty stomach at the time of the procedure The patient should wash hair before coming for the treatment and not apply anything thereafter.
Procedure The blood is drawn from the patients and is centrifuged. This procedure separates the platelet-rich plasma from the rest of the blood The treatment area is numbed by injecting lidocaine. The obtained PRP is injected at multiple places under the skin The procedure takes 30 to 45 minutes with zero downtime.
Post Treatment The treated area should not be washed for at least 48 hours after the procedure Soreness can persist for two to three days after the procedure Any kind of hair care products and colouring should be avoided for at least a week post-treatment.
Results The treatment requires 5 to 6 sittings one month apart the results are individualistic but are most visible post 5th sitting. The treatment is not permanent and may require maintenance injection.
Safety The procedure is completely safe if performed by a qualified doctor as it uses patients own blood.
Cost Approximately 8000 per sitting a minimum of 5 sittings required.
